The status in which we have placed them is an elevation. They are elevated from the condition in which God first created them, by being made our slaves. None of that race on the whole face of the globe can be compared with the slaves of the South.
They are happy, content, unaspiring, and utterly incapable, from intellectual weakness, ever to give us any trouble by their aspirations. Yours are white, of your own race; you are brothers of one blood. They are your equals in natural endowment of intellect, and they feel galled by their degradation. On the eve of secession, Georgia Governor Joseph E. Brown concurred :. Among us the poor white laborer is respected as an equal. His family is treated with kindness, consideration and respect.
He does not belong to the menial class. The negro is in no sense of the term his equal. He feels and knows this. He belongs to the only true aristocracy, the race of white men. He black no masters boots, and bows the knee to no one save God alone.
He receives higher wages for his labor than does the laborer of any other portion of the world, and he raises up his children with the knowledge, that they belong to no inferior cast, but that the highest members of the society in which he lives, will, if their conduct is good, respect and treat them as equals.
Thus in the minds of these Southern nationalists, the destruction of slavery would not merely mean the loss of property but the destruction of white equality, and thus of the peculiar Southern way of life :. If the policy of the Republicans is carried out, according to the programme indicated by the leaders of the party, and the South submits, degradation and ruin must overwhelm alike all classes of citizens in the Southern States.
Slaveholders were not modest about the perceived virtues of their way of life. In the years leading up to the Civil War, calls for expansion into the tropics reached a fever pitch, and slaveholders marveled at the possibility of spreading a new empire into central America :.
Looking into the possibilities of the future, regarding the magnificent country of tropical America, which lies in the path of our destiny on this continent, we may see an empire as powerful and gorgeous as ever was pictured in our dreams of history. What is that empire? It is an empire founded on military ideas; representing the noble peculiarities of Southern civilization; including within its limits the isthmuses of America and the regenerated West Indies; having control of the two dominant staples of the world's commerce—cotton and sugar; possessing the highways of the world's commerce; surpassing all empires of the age in the strength of its geographical position; and, in short, combining elements of strength, prosperity, and glory, such as never before in the modern ages have been placed within the reach of a single government.
What a splendid vision of empire! How sublime in its associations! How noble and inspiriting the idea, that upon the strange theatre of tropical America, once, if we may believe the dimmer facts of history, crowned with magnificent empires and flashing cities and great temples, now covered with mute ruins, and trampled over by half-savages, the destiny of Southern civilization is to be consummated in a glory brighter even than that of old, the glory of an empire, controlling the commerce of the world, impregnable in its position, and representing in its internal structure the most harmonious of all the systems of modern civilization.
Perhaps even this is too subtle. I want Cuba, and I know that sooner or later we must have it. If the worm-eaten throne of Spain is willing to give it for a fair equivalent, well—if not, we must take it.
I want Tamaulipas, Potosi, and one or two other Mexican States; and I want them all for the same reason—for the planting and spreading of slavery.
He says he made the tune and compiled the words from various sources. Here are a couple of Ballad Index entries on the Cruel War type of song you can see by the cross references that there are more than these two sets. When it says "earliest date", that's defined as "The earliest date at which we could verify , from print or manuscript, that the ballad was in circulation; obviously this is subject to correction.
His sweetheart begs to go with him. He refuses her; military service would fade her beauty. She offers to buy his release; this too fails. In some versions Johnny relents and allows her to come. The song is clearly much older than that, however. His sweetheart Nancy offers to dress in men's clothes and accompany him.

Sep 06, Mom2three rated it it was amazing. One thing I love about Dani Rene's writing is the complexity of everything. Her plots are deep and twisted, and keep me on the edge of my seat, her characters are well developed, and she knows how to get your blood pumping with her passionate sexy scenes. I love devouring her stories as fast as I can, and then I always suffer a book hangover when I finish. The good thing about this one is that it's the first book in a new series, so there is going to be more of this wild ride.
This is an enemies One thing I love about Dani Rene's writing is the complexity of everything. This is an enemies to lover romance that is full of lies, secrets, obsession, and burning passion. You are thrust into the action on almost the first page and it doesn't slow down until the end.
It's crazy intense! Ares is the ultimate bad boy who comes from a very powerful family with some serious secrets. His past has made him angry and he's out for some serious revenge. Dahlia is the new girl in town who has suffered some tragedies but hasn't let them break her. When they go up against each other sparks fly and their passion rages like an inferno, but the anger and hate burn just as hot.
This story is a fast-paced, suspenseful read that shouldn't be missed. Aug 23, Jill Badker rated it it was amazing. Dahlia and Ares are part of a war neither of them knew existed. Nor did they want to be apart of it. But when we are born into a family we don't always get what we want. But do we have to follow what our ancestors did?
Isn't change a good thing. Dani brings us on this crazy ride of the Gilded Sovereign and everything that comes with a secret society. But getting to know Dahlia and Ares made the ride so worth it. I can't wait to find out more about this sovereign and they people who are part of i Dahlia and Ares are part of a war neither of them knew existed.
I can't wait to find out more about this sovereign and they people who are part of it. Nov 15, Philomena Callan Cheekypee rated it it was amazing Shelves: loved-it. I was super excited to see this author was writing a new series. She is an awesome writer and it seems that no matter what she writes I love. This is another to add to that as this consumed me. Ares and Dahlia. Crikey their story was all kinds of everything.
So many questions and so many answers. This book grabbed me hook, line and sinker. Dani is in a league of her own. Expect the unexpected with her. This is a superb read and I was super excited to see this author was writing a new series. Aug 22, Paula D rated it it was amazing. Intense edge of your seat book. A hate to love romance that keeps you wanting more and more. Ares is a alpha male who will do anything for his father.
Both together is like fire! Love, lust, anger and angst are a few things that comes to mind when I think about this book. It consumes you in its entirety, I couldn't put it down. Ares set my soul on fire, hes angry and bitter and hellbent on revenge, Dahlia is strong and sweet and is caught in the crossfire.
Go read this now!! Cant wait for what comes next!! Sep 05, Cheyenne rated it really liked it. Cruel War was the first book in the Gilded Sovereign series.
I can tell this series is going to be great! I look forward to reading more in this series. This book has great characters! Dahlia is such a strong character and I start to like Ares more throughout the story. This book is dark and will keep you guessing until the end. This is one series I can NOT wait to continue! Especially when Ares Lancaster, the young God of the school and the town, sets his sights on her. I want to dirty up her pristine appearance. Ares Lancaster has recently taken his place as a part of the Gilded Sovereign.
The Gilded Sovereign is a secret society that Ares and his family, as well as many other rich and powerful families, have been a part of for centuries. Four young men will take charge as their fathers step down. Nothing can change their fate, and nobody can stop their path.
This is their destiny. Dahlia has now become a pawn in a dangerous game of revenge. But when secrets and lies are unraveled, Dahlia threatens to change history and the future The suspense, the heat, the angsttt!
Cruel War had it all and I was completely hooked from page one! The tension continued to rack up with every single chapter and the anticipation had my heart pounding and me on the edge of my seat up until the very end! Family, enemies, deceit, betrayal, lies, and revenge Cruel War has it all!
Dahlia is a force to be reckoned with! The more Ares pushes her, the more she pushes back! Dahlia is nothing like Ares expected her to be and throws him totally off his game.
Least of all my stupid fluttering heartbeat. Ares starts off as an anti-hero but we see the most character development throughout the story with him. Back to top.
